Introductory course in Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies, with an emphasis on historical framings and interdisciplinary approaches. Major themes include colonialism, racism, labor, migration, community, and resistance.

 

We will explore the histories of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in relation to the US empire and the American nation. Central questions that we will address are: How can we frame US history to address longstanding issues that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have faced? How have Asians and Pacific Islanders figured in US racial formations? How have Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders struggled for justice and democracy?

Introductory history of Asian Indians, Chinese, Filipinos, Japanese and Koreans in the United States from the 1840s to the 1960s. Major themes include imperialism, labor migration, racism, community formation, and resistance.
