Covers the exploration and understanding of the arctic and antarctic from the seventeenth century through the twentieth, with an emphasis on the intersections of science and statecraft, international cooperation, and emerging ideas of how global systems function and how humanity affects them.

Introduction to the discipline of history. Emphasizes the basic skills of reading, analysis, and communication (both verbal and written) in history. Each seminar discusses a different subject or problem.
