Information on fellowships and scholarships available for incoming graduate students.

  • Departmental Awards
    The Department offers a number of fellowships to incoming students each year. Recipients are chosen from among the pool of competitive applicants by the Graduate Admissions Committee; direct application is not permitted.
  • Non-Departmental Awards
    Additionally there are a limited number of recruitment fellowships funded through the Graduate School and other sources. As with the Departmental awards, recipients are chosen from among the pool of competitive applicants and direct application is not permitted.

 

Departmental Awards

Elizabeth Brown Ayers Fellowship

Fellowships to graduate students in American history. Awards are based on financial need. In order to qualify for consideration applicants must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies Graduate Recruitment Award

Provides support to graduate students in the Department of History.

Doctor Ebba Dahlin Fellowship

Fellowships for graduate students in the Department of History.

Charles H. Heffelfinger Fellowship in History

Financial assistance to deserving graduate students in American history.

Lawrence J. Roseman Fellowship in Ancient History

Funding to support the recruitment or continuing study of outstanding graduate students, in or entering the MA program, in the Department of History. Preference given to graduate students of ancient history.

John Calhoun Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund

For research and scholarships devoted to the history of territorial government in the states of Washington and Idaho.

Maggie and Doug Walker Funds

Provides support to graduate students in the Department of History.

Luckie Agee Waller Scholarship

Scholarships for graduate students in the Department of History. Scholarship recipients must be citizens of the United States.

Visiting Committee Scholarship

Provides support to graduate students in the Department of History.


 

Non-Departmental Awards

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship Program

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship Program awards approximately 30 scholarships to incoming graduate students.

Titus Ellison Fellowship

For an incoming M.A. student in Russian Studies, this award covers tuition and a stipend in the range of $11,000-$14,000. The award is administered by the Jackson School of International Studies.

Fellowships for advanced training in Canadian, East-, Central-, South-, and Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern, Russian, and Eastern and Western European Area Studies.

Awards based on merit, financial need, and diversity. Available to doctoral students only.

Graduate School Recruitment Travel Funds

Travel awards are intended to bring applicants to the UW to visit campus and meet with faculty and students. Travel funds may be used solely for airfare or other transportation fares.

Graduate School Top Scholar Award Vigfusson Fellowship

Awarded to a top applicant. Includes tuition waiver, benefits, and monthly stipend.

Graduate School Top Scholar Non-Service Research Assistant Award

One to three quarters of non-service Research Assistant support to be awarded to a top applicant. Award includes tuition waiver, benefits, and monthly stipend.

Jackson School of International Studies China Studies Program Award

These grants, renewable for a total of three years of funding, are for students entering a graduate program in any area of China studies. The award provides tuition and a stipend of approximately $14,000. Entering students may not apply for this fellowship; instead, they must be nominated by their department. Candidates seeking renewal must apply. Priority given to U.S. citizens. Normally two or three new fellowships are offered each year. The award is administered by the Jackson School of International Studies.

Jacob K. Javits Fellowship

Fellowships to assist students of superior ability to pursue graduate programs leading to the doctorate or the Master of Fine Arts in selected fields in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

Simpson Center Scholars Doctoral Recruitment Award

With funds generated by the Robert Bolles and Yasuko Endo Endowed Fund and from the College of Arts and Sciences' 2002 pledge-match program for graduate student support, the Simpson Center offers recruitment bonuses to incoming doctoral students in the humanities who demonstrate interest and promise in developing comparative and cross-disciplinary critical approaches to their studies and research.
