Graduate Student Prizes

The History Department offers a number of prizes through the generosity of private donors. Applications for these prizes are generally accepted each Winter, with the awards being made in late Spring of each year.

  2. Upload a copy of your paper to the Dropbox–please remove all personal information so the paper can be read anonymously

Thomas M. Power Endowed Prize Fund for Excellence in History: Outstanding Graduate Student Paper

The Thomas Power Prize is given annually for an outstanding graduate research paper. First prize carries an award of $1000; honorable mention carries $500. Students must apply for the award; applications are generally accepted during the month of March each year. Recipients of this award are selected by the Undergraduate Studies Committee each spring. Papers must have been written during the current academic year as part of the student's graduate work at the University of Washington.

Requirements:

  1. Applicants must be enrolled graduate students in good standing in the History Graduate Program at the University of Washington.
  2. Papers must have been written for a course assignment or a graduate seminar paper (not as a part of a thesis or dissertation or as a conference paper).
  3. Papers must have been completed during the academic year or the previous spring quarter.
  4. Papers may not exceed fifty pages in length, must be typed, double-spaced, and use proper citation methods.
  5. Each student may only submit one entry per year.

 

The John and Linda Ravage Prize for Research Projects about African Americans in the American West

The John and Linda Ravage Prize is given to the best graduate research paper or project (including but not limited to scripts, photo essays, radio productions, television or film documentaries, or oral histories) on a topic in the History of African Americans in the American West, broadly defined as any of the states from North Dakota to Texas and west to the Pacific Ocean including Alaska and Hawaii, over the chronological period extending from 1528 to the present. Papers on western Canada or northern Mexico will also be considered. A review committee for the Department will select the best paper or project on the basis of the significance of the work, its style of presentation, and its contribution to the study of History. The winner will receive a certificate and $500. Students must apply for the award; applications are generally accepted during the month of March each year. Recipients of this award are selected by the Undergraduate Studies Committee each spring. Papers must have been written during the current academic year as part of the student's graduate work at the University of Washington.

Requirements:

  1. Applicants must be currently enrolled in the History Graduate Program at the University of Washington.
  2. Papers or projects must have been completed for a course at the UW either the previous spring quarter, or during the current academic year.
  3. Written materials may not exceed fifty pages in length, must be typed, double-spaced, and use proper citation methods.
  4. Each student may only submit one entry per year.
