Syllabus Description (from Canvas):

This course is an introduction to the social and cultural history of premodern Europe. It covers how Europeans accomplished fundamental imperatives to farm, feed, and reproduce between 800 and 1800 AD with attention to climatic, economic, social, and cultural contexts. Themes include Europe's changing place in global trade circuits, demographic regimes, the organization of farming, and how religious life gave meaning to ordinary lives. You will reflect on how past humans have lived in community and may reflect on present implications.

This is a synchronous, in-person course. Participation is crucial for success. Our focus will be on getting the most out of each class meeting. There are two required physical books and considerable electronic readings. Materials are organized into modules on Canvas. Assignments will focus on demonstrating attainment of course goals. These include reading responses for each course meeting, one in-class, verbal presentation of the readings to the class, three 500- to 750-word essays, and a final examination. Writing credit is optional by arrangement with the instructor.
