This course will examine social transformations that enabled and resulted from China's transformation from an empire to a nation state in the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.  Topics covered in the course range from shifts in family and social relations to changes in daily life experiences.  

Catalog Description:
Surveys major issues and approaches to the study of the role of the Chinese people in China's historical development. Historical focus of course varies with instructor. Offered: jointly with JSIS A 456.
