Ph.D. Degree Departmental Requirements

Degree requirements are set in part by the Graduate School and in part by the History Department. The Ph.D. student must satisfy the degree requirements that are in force at the time the Ph.D. is awarded. Ph.D. students should read all relevant information on the History Department's website and the Graduate School's website. These requirements are subject to change at any time. It is the student's responsibility to be aware of the requirements in effect at the time of the degree.

The History Department's Ph.D. pathways vary according to whether a student:

  1. completed the UW MA in History and then promoted to the History Ph.D. program or
  2. completed an MA at a different institution and was then admitted to the UW History Graduate Program at the Ph.D. level.
