Art, Culture, Empire: Spain and its Golden Age

Next Offered
Spring 2025

Spend spring quarter in Spain! This coming spring (2025), History is hosting a study abroad program in León, in lovely, historical, northwest Spain. This program allows students to study Spanish history, literature, art, and language in Spain—a full immersion in Spanish history, culture, and society. Students earn up to 16 credits (which can count toward History and/or Spanish). Courses explore Spanish cultural history, spanning Spain's coalescence in the Middle Ages to its ascent as a global power in the Renaissance to its experience of industrialization in the nineteenth century to its struggles with nationalism in the modern era. The curriculum embraces political and social history, as well as the arts and literature of the Spanish Golden Age; classes are hosted by the UW León Center, housed in a historic Renaissance palace. Students also have the opportunity to study Spanish language at the University of León's highly regarded Language Center, which offers instructions at all levels.
