Sarah M. Zaides

I am in the final stages of completing my dissertation, Tevye's Ottoman Daughter: Ashkenazi and Sephardi Jews in the Shatterzones of Empire, 1882-1923, which follows the saga of Russian Jewish refugees in the twilight years of the Ottoman Empire. I examine the religious, political, and national identities of a diverse group of Ashkenazi and Sephardi Jews in the entrep“t of turn-of-the-century Constantinople and in Western Anatolia. I work with primarily Russian, French, Ladino, and Hebrew sources and the project is supervised by Professors Glennys Young, Devin Naar, and Noam Pianko.

My project has been supported by the Woodrow Wilson Foundation's Charlotte Newcombe Fellowship, the Joff Hanauer Fellowship for the Study of Western Civilization, the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture, the Stroum Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Washington, the Genesis Institute at Brandeis University, and I was previously the Titus Ellison Fellow in the Jackson School of International Studies.
