Professor Josh Reid on the link between Orca recovery and Coast Salish values and practices

Submitted by Eric W. Johnson on

History Professor Josh Reid was recently featured in an article in Salish Sea Currents, exploring new approaches to protecting and rebuilding Orca populations in the Salish Sea. Reid highlighted the role that Indigenous communities - and their values, attitudes and practices - may play in helping us to rethink our ecological laws and policies:

"For many Indigenous communities, including Coast Salish nations, 'it's not the rights of the individual that's paramount. It's the relationships between all the various facets of that community,' Reid told Salish Sea Currents. And ‘community’ includes other species and entities such as salmon, orca, and the Salish Sea itself."
