The Department of History would like to announce a special event in memory of our esteemed colleague, Stephanie Camp. The conference, "Ever Closer to Freedom: The Work and Legacies of Stephanie M. H. Camp," will take place on May 7th and 8th. The conference is co-organized by the UW Department of History, Edward E. Baptist (Cornell University), and Barbara Krauthamer (University of Massachusetts, Amherst).
In the weeks after Stephanie passed away, last year on April 2nd, many of her friends agreed that such a conference would provide an opportunity to acknowledge Stephanie's important contributions to the study of Black women and slavery. This conference aims to recognize Stephanie's tremendous intellectual legacy as well as the lasting significance of her work as a teacher and mentor. Those who will present their work at this conference represent a new generation of scholars whose methodological and interpretative approaches to the study of women and slavery have been informed by Stephanie's scholarship. Robin D. G. Kelley (UCLA) will provide a keynote lecture on the first day of the conference.
